1988 classic Amiga game - simulators

Looking at screenshots of *Red Storm Rising*, it is hard to believe—not just that it is a simulator, but even that it is a game at all. Yet, it is.

To begin with, the developers drew inspiration from Tom Clancy’s novel of the same name, which depicts an undersea war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. As one might guess, the simulation focuses on attack submarines—vessels designed to engage and destroy enemy forces. And that is precisely what the player does. Whether in standalone simulator missions or in a full campaign titled "World War III," you command an American submarine and engage in duels against one or more adversaries. The game’s presentation is very basic, though that is arguably its only real shortcoming. It excels at capturing the realities of combat command: the various weapon types, the tactics employed by each side, and the impact of environmental factors—such as oceanic thermal layers, the SOSUS system, and equipment malfunctions. You will encounter both surface ships and submarines, sometimes in entire task forces. During the conflict, the Warsaw Pact launches an offensive against Western Europe; operating from bases in Great Britain, you carry out a series of missions—typically involving the interception of enemy convoys—while navigating your vessel across a map of the North Atlantic.

The game may not be a visual masterpiece, but in terms of substance, it is a highly successful title. It offers almost all the features a submarine captain could have expected at the time—such as a database of acoustic signatures for various Soviet classes, the ability to control torpedo trajectories, and so on.
