I don’t know about you, but I’ve never been particularly interested in what steel giants of warfare look like on a modern battlefield, yet I’ve already learned quite a bit about it thanks to this game. It’s somewhat similar to Team Yankee, but you control only one platoon (four tanks), and it’s more of a simulation, or even a strategy game, than a shooter. This is because M1 Abrams tanks are packed with electronics, so hitting even a moving target while traveling at 100 km/h over uneven terrain shouldn’t pose the slightest problem. The laser sight with rangefinder, gyroscopic barrel stabilizers, and target tracking are enough to make you feel like you’re on a shooting range in any conditions. In action, you can play as one of four crew members or direct the actions of all forces (your platoon and support forces) on the strategy screen. In addition to individual missions, we also have a campaign option, which is a series of interconnected battles (for example, in one battle we attack a hill, in the next we defend it, and then cover the retreat of our forces under the enemy’s offensive). Depending on the circumstances, we will have to attack or defend a point specified in the orders. Using the cover of hills when approaching the enemy is crucial in combat, but caution is also necessary, as the other side often places anti-tank missile launchers on their summits. Furthermore, it’s crucial to use support forces skillfully – these will usually be light personnel carriers carrying infantry or rocket launchers, but artillery, self-propelled howitzers, and perhaps even helicopters may also be available. Just one look at the simple, vector graphics is enough to guess that the game comes from the early 90s, but if that doesn’t bother you, I guarantee you won’t be bored with M1 TANK PLATOON.
