Gunship 2000 Classic Amiga game

1994 classic Amiga game - flight simulators

Few films in cinema history have had sequels that surpassed the original, yet with games, the opposite is usually true, thanks to advancements in graphics and sound, increased processing power, and so on. Or simply due to great ideas.

"Gunship 2000" differs from the original "Gunship" in virtually every respect, save for the protagonist. The term "gunship" itself refers to helicopters capable of engaging any adversary in direct combat, from aircraft to infantry (or perhaps even cavalry). Consequently, the game offers a selection of models, ranging from the classic AH-64 Apache to the semi-transport UH-60 Black Hawk. While this might sound like standard fare for a flight simulator, the similarities end there. For starters, every mission involves at least one wingman helicopter over which we have near-total control. Furthermore, depending on the helicopter type, various useful gadgets are available, such as a specialized optical system housed in a sphere above the main rotor. We can delegate electronic warfare tasks (radar jamming and missile countermeasures) to our navigator; the helicopters can automatically maintain a set altitude above the ground; and a single button press allows the aircraft to enter a hover mode, among other features. Yet these are just individual missions; as proponents of the "big picture" approach, we will naturally want to dive into the campaign. We can operate in several theaters of war (Central Europe, the Persian Gulf, etc.) and undertake procedurally generated missions, making the repetition of any specific scenario highly unlikely. A wide array of weaponry and an intuitive interface for commanding entire formations allow you to spend hours immersed in a world of exploding bunkers and shredded armor.

In terms of graphics, the game employed state-of-the-art terrain generation systems for its time, and it shows - in G2000, you can genuinely fly through canyons and riverbeds, or even have a close encounter with high-voltage power lines. The sound is also quite impressive, while the gameplay is something you’ll have to judge for yourselves. For me, there is no better-designed flight simulator.
