1989 classic Amiga game -
688 is the designation of the American Los Angeles class nuclear submarines, belonging to the so-called attack submarines type, which means that their main goal is to fight with other warships (it is the equivalent of fighter planes). This game, as you can guess, simulates such boat, and its Soviet counterpart - the Alfa class submarine. You can choose from several missions taking place in various places of the world, but generally they are similar - sneak to the target as quiet as you can and destroy it before you are detected. Anyone who likes something like that certainly will not be disappointed - the game very faithfully simulates all aspects of the submarine warfare (including whales, which can confuse the novice commanders). The basic construction of the interface is not different from other games of the genre - the boat is split into different stations that you can move between. Some of the stations show you all the elements on one screen (f.e. sensors, weapons), so you can operate everything in one place. Also a 3D simulation of the underwater situation is quite nice idea that gives a different perspective on what is going. The game does not look stunning, but on the simulation side it is really top quality. Not full of action, mind you, it is one of the games for patient people, who love to plan their moves before they do anything and work around the limitations of the scenarios and the equipment you are given.
