1987 classic Amiga game - simulators
During Cold War new Soviet nuclear submarine, called Red October, sets out into North Sea and soon after the whole Soviet Navy is trying to intercept it. The reason is simple - the submarine captain decided to defect to the other side and right now he is on the way to deliver his warship to United States. But Red October is not one of many Soviet submarines, it is equipped with experimental propulsion (called "caterpillar") that makes it almost impossible to be detected by passive sonars, because it does not use propellers that make far more noise. But for the captain simply stealing the new baby of Soviet Navy and give it away to the enemies wasnít enough - he also sent a letter to the head of the Soviet fleet and informed him of his plans. Thatís why now every Soviet warship is hunting down Red October before the new technology can be taken over by the enemy.
Computer game based on the 1984 Tom Clancy novel sounded like a great idea, at least for the first five minutes of the game. We take part of the Red October captain, who is trying to reach the United States while whole Soviet Navy is doing all they can to intercept him. Unfortunately the game did not manage to grasp the great atmosphere and great plot of the original and all we are given hardly can be called "ultimate submarine combat simulator" (as publisher advertised it). The options we are given are rather limited, the gameplay is very simplified and the whole experience is painfully dull - there is not even an option available to increase time speed and we are stuck for hours in front of the map.
